Dad explained this picture to me.

Probably 1940 during reserve training when all 21 year olds were called up for 3-month training at Hull barracks maybe.

Looks like a Vickers .30 calibre. No ammunition belt visible. Only he and Sergeant have US helmets, group in the background all have early Canadian/UK style helmets.
